What is Ventotherapy?

Ventotherapy, also known as vacuum massage or cupping therapy, is a holistic treatment that uses specially designed vacuum cups to create gentle suction on the skin. This technique has its roots in ancient Eastern medicine and has been used for centuries to stimulate energy flow, release muscle tension, and improve overall well-being.
During a session, I place plastic or silicone cups on specific areas of your body. The suction created inside the cup gently lifts your skin and the underlying tissues. This process promotes blood and lymphatic circulation, helps release muscle adhesions, and encourages natural detoxification.

How Does Ventotherapy Work?

Your treatment begins with a brief consultation to determine the areas of focus and ensure there are no contraindications. I then apply a natural oil or balm to allow the cups to glide smoothly over your skin.
Depending on your needs, I may use static cupping—where the cups remain in one place for a few minutes—or dynamic cupping, where the cups are moved in long, flowing strokes along the muscles. You will feel a gentle pulling sensation as the vacuum lifts your skin, which most clients find deeply relaxing and therapeutic.
After the cups are removed, I often finish with a light manual massage to soothe the skin and support circulation. Mild redness or marks may appear on the skin especially if the tension or congestion was severe enough, or the blood flow in the tissues had been impaired for a long time and there were stagnant processes a red mark from cupping may remain quite bright; this is normal and typically fades within a few days as your body eliminates toxins and metabolic waste.

Benefits of Ventotherapy

From my experience as a massage therapist, ventotherapy provides powerful results for both the body and mind. Some of the key benefits include:
  • Deep muscle relaxation and release of chronic tension
  • Improved blood and lymphatic circulation
  • Reduction of swelling and cellulite
  • Enhanced skin tone and elasticity
  • Detoxification and immune system support
  • Relief from pain and stiffness in the back, neck, and shoulders
  • Stress reduction and overall sense of balance
Regular sessions can help the body restore its natural equilibrium, boost energy, and support long-term wellness.

Indications and Contraindications

Ventotherapy can be especially beneficial for people dealing with:
  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or fatigue
  • Poor circulation or lymphatic congestion
  • Cellulite or loss of skin elasticity
  • Chronic stress or nervous tension
However, this treatment is not recommended for clients who have:
  • Skin inflammation, wounds, or infections
  • Varicose veins or fragile capillaries
  • Blood disorders or use of anticoagulant medication
  • Pregnancy (without prior medical consultation)
  • High fever or severe heart conditions
Before each session, I always discuss your health background to ensure the treatment is both safe and effective for you.

A Personal Note

As a therapist, I love seeing how ventotherapy helps my clients release long-held tension and reconnect with their bodies. The visible and tangible results—lighter muscles, smoother skin, and a profound sense of relaxation—make this treatment one of my favorites to perform.
If you’ve never tried vacuum massage before, I invite you to experience its restorative benefits for yourself. Your body will thank you.
